Time to get back to Dr. Delaware. If I was going to write a bunch more books featuring AD, I needed to know him better. This novel features Alex as the main character rather than as a therapist/detective/foil for other people’s actions and emotions. Always struggling to stretch within the confines of a series, I attempted to create a darker mood - borderline-surreal and reminiscent of the best filmes noir. The success of the book was instant, but marred a bit by my diagnosis of thyroid cancer at age 39. Scanning the latest best-seller list while hospitalized after surgery was a personal dose of surrealism. So was encountering the hospital phlebotomist (needle tech) who assured me she liked my books and would therefore do her best not to hurt me. I got through it, made it home, dragged myself to my office and got to work on another one.

"Combing a judicious use of psychological detail with suspenseful sleuthing, Kellerman's fourth Delaware novel is certain to increase the author's already substantial audience (seven million of his books are already in print)... Copious helpings of red herrings are served along the way, as the family secrets are gradually revealed and the horror escalates. Expect that seven million figure to climb dramatically." --Booklist

"A complex talke of guilt, greed and expiation...Kellerman keeps his labrynthine plot in hand, peopling it with eccentric, memorable characters." --Publishers Weekly
